About FractalBurning
Fractal burning also known as Lichtenberg burning is a mesmerizing art form that involves the use of high-voltage electricity to burn complex, lightning-like patterns into the surface of wood. These patterns, known as Lichtenberg figures, naturally mimic forms found in nature such as tree branches, river systems, lightning strikes, and even neural pathways. Each piece is entirely unique, shaped by the unpredictable path of electricity as it travels across the wood's surface.
The process works by applying a conductive solution (usually a baking soda and water mix) to the wood, which allows electricity to flow. Using a high-voltage power source, typically repurposed from devices like microwave transformers, electrical current is passed through the wood. As the electricity seeks out paths of least resistance, it burns deeply into the grain, leaving behind intricate, organic designs that are both chaotic and harmonious.
While the results are visually stunning, fractal burning is extremely dangerous and should never be attempted without the proper training and equipment. The voltages used in this process— exceeding 12,000 volts—can cause severe injury or death in an instant. Numerous accidents and fatalities have been reported from individuals attempting this technique without professional knowledge or safety measures.
At FractalFireDesigns, we approach this process with both artistic intention and deep respect for the risks involved. All of our fractal-burned artwork is created using strict safety protocols, professional-grade equipment, and years of experience. We do not recommend or endorse DIY fractal burning under any circumstances.
Each piece we create tells a story shaped by the raw forces of nature and electricity—capturing beauty born from chaos, fire, and form.
